Eating the Tithe, Short Version
So, you want to know what the bible has to say about the tithe, or tithing? Now don't be
afraid, go ahead, drag out your bible and blow the dust off of it, provided you can find it.
Tithing isn't in the New Testament by the way, it's just not taught. Here is where it comes
from, the old covenant.
Deut. 12:6 and 7 I'll paraphrase the KJV, bring your tithes, etc. and other offerings and
there in the presence of the Lord your God, you and your families shall eat and shall
rejoice in everything you have put your hand to, because the Lord your God has blessed
you. KJV
I know, it sounds like heresy already doesn't it? But it's not, it's straight out of the bible.
I'm just sad it took me 56 years to read this in my own bible. I'm so happy to have found
it and now I'm sharing it with everyone I meet, including you. It's revolutionary!
Now in Deut. 12:12 And there rejoice before the Lord your God, you [this means you],
your sons and daughters [this means your kids], your menservants and your
maidservants [this means all your hired hands], and the Levites from your towns [this
means your pastor and all his family including kids and hired help, probably stretching this
a bit to make a point]. KJV
The bible says, those who seek will find, those who knock, it will be opened. Today is your
day, this is revelation of God's word and the truth will set me and you, f-r-e-e. I'm happy
and I hope you see immediately the implications of the truth about the tithe. God is
awesome, he loves us, and he'd never do anything to hurt us. He wants to bless us, but
what's even greater, he wants to bless everyone he can. And he will use me and you to get
it done too, it's part of his plan.
Okay for those of you who already know Malachi 3:9 you already know about robbing God
and the curse you bring on yourself by not tithing, right? First let me say, was tithing part
of the old covenant? Yes it was, there are no Levites today, they are long gone. Here is a
scripture or two to comfort you in light of learning the tithe was really for you to have a
great party in front of God and everybody. Here they are.
Luke 9:51 And it came to pass, when the time was come that he [the Lord Jesus] should
be received up, he steadfastly set his face to go to Jerusalem, 52 And sent messengers
before his face: and they went, and entered into a village of the Samaritans, to make ready
for him. 53 And they did not receive him, because his face was as though he would go to
Jerusalem. 54 And when his disciples James and John saw this, they said, Lord, wilt thou
that we command fire to come down from heaven, and consume them, even as Elias did?
55 But he turned, and rebuked them, and said, Ye know not what manner of spirit ye are
of. 56 For the Son of man is not come to destroy men's lives, but to save them. And they
went to another village. [KJV]
Notice that this was James and John, his closest disciples. Ye know not what manner of
spirit you are of, ouch. They wanted to call down fire on the poor folks in the village. The
Son of man [Jesus] came to save men, not destroy them. Wow. Still worried about
Malachi, don't be. Jesus became a curse for us, for cursed is every man who hangeth upon
a tree. Forget it, there are no curses in the New Testament.
Galatians 3:13 Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for
us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree: 14 That the blessing of
Abraham might come on the Gentiles through Jesus Christ; that we might receive the
promise of the Spirit through faith.
The Malachi curse was for the Levites and Israelites who were robbing God. Now if you
and I don bandanas and take our pistols into the First Church downtown Sunday morning
just about offering time and stage a holdup. God might have something to say about that,
we just might get our come-up-ance and rightly so. So, do you see how silly it is to
consider Malachi today as valid, it's just not valid. Besides, God is no longer satisfied with
ten percent for the poor and Levites, he wants it all, 100 percent.
Peter says you are the royal priesthood, there are no Levites today. Paul said, those that
preach the gospel, should live of the gospel, then he adds a big BUT. 1 Cor. 9:12b But we do
not use this right. On the contrary, we put up with anything rather than hinder the gospel
of Christ. Remember, Paul worked with his own hands, he was a tentmaker, so that he
would not become a burden to those around him. Yes, he took offerings of several
congregations for the poor in Jerusalem, and I'm sure he got a few free meals along the
way too. I like Paul, a lot, can't wait to meet him, he's gonna get a great big bear hug from
Bruce, that's me.
Back to the 100 percent, here you go, it's in Romans 12:1-2 Therefore, I urge you,
brothers, in view of God's mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing
to God — this is your spiritual act of worship. 2Do not conform any longer to the pattern of
this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test
and approve what God's will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will. NIV
1 Peter 2:4-6 As you come to him, the living Stone—rejected by men but chosen by God
and precious to him— 5 you also, like living stones, are being built into a spiritual house to
be a holy priesthood, offering spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. 6
For in Scripture it says: "See, I lay a stone in Zion, a chosen and precious cornerstone, and
the one who trusts in him will never be put to shame." NIV
I'm going to post this on the website now, my first article, I'll make a stab at shortening it
to one page but this is the best I can do for now. God bless you. Feel free to be curse free,
and feel free to email if you like. Check out my introduction letter. PS The New
Testament if full of verses on giving, so you are not completely off the hook.
