The two passages of Matthew 23 and Luke 11 are parallel scripture, restating the same event of Jesus
talking to the Pharisees and scribes. He tells them not to omit the weightier matters of law, judgement,
mercy, faith, and love, while they were consumed with tithing insignificant amounts of spices they
raised themselves.
In Luke 18 you have the story of the self-righteous Pharisee comparing himself to a publican sinner
abasing himself at the temple. The Pharisee proclaims that he tithes of all that he possesses.
Next we have a series of verses from Hebrews 7, verse 5 shows the commandment to the Levitical priests to
take tithes of the people according to the law. In verse 6 it mentions that Melchizedek who didn't descend
from Levi received tithes of Abraham. Verse 8 Levites that die received tithes, contrasted against
Melchizedek who was without end, a forerunner or shadow type of Christ. Levi who received tithes also
paid tithes in Abraham.
That's it. Two parallel scriptures mentioning Pharisees tithing as necessary in Judaism (the old
covenant) but unimportant. Luke another Pharisee applauding his own virtue while deriding others for
their sins paid a tithe on his stuff. And finally a series of tithing mentioned relating to Abraham,
Melchizedek and Levi.
Not a single verse telling Christians to tithe in the New Testament. So where does it come
from? You guessed it, the Old Testament or Old Covenant. The New Covenant was considered better
because it was founded on better promises. There you have the shortest teaching on the tithe you've
ever heard in your life and you can be assured from this brief study that no where in the New Covenant or
New Testament is tithing commanded of Christians, it's not there, period.
Heb. 8:6 But now hath he obtained a more excellent ministry, by how much also he is the mediator of a
better covenant, which was established upon better promises.
Tithing as such is a work of the law, not of the Spirit. Curses are old covenant. So by walking in the Spirit
we won't fulfill the desires of the flesh, nor be judged by the law.
Gal. 3:13 Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: For it is written,
Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree.
Jesus is the mediator of a better covenant. If he'd wanted Christians under the Law of the Old Covenant
Tithe, he'd have told us. The Apostle Paul who wrote 2/3rds of the new testament, had he needed to teach
the tithe, he would have done so. Neither did any other disciple teach it, because it was old testament law,
pertaining mainly to the Levites, but not completely. Deut. 12 and 14 teach you how to eat your own tithe
before the LORD your God. Prove it to yourself, grab a concordance or go to biblegateway.com
and see what it has to say.
You are not under the law, the tithe is. The ordinances that were against us were nailed to the cross
with Christ, he took them away. He took the curse of Malachi as well, it's nailed to Jesus' cross. We are
free to give under the direction of the third person of the Godhead, the indwelling Holy Spirit. We hear his
voice, and the voice of a stranger we will not follow. We are a kindom of priests it says in Peter, we are the
temple of the Holy Spirit. We obey his voice, and we don't even need a calculator, He's in us.
