Not long ago I had a friend who faced knee surgery. He was athletic all his life a very
active man, but time and torture took it's toll on his joints. Of course he'd prayed and
asked God to heal his ailment to no avail. That led him to schedule a knee operation to
correct the problem. Concerned and prayerful myself for him, I began to meditate the
situation. My mind turned to Job and his friends, and that began a study or at least a
reading of the entire book of Job early one morning. What I found amazed me, but
what occurred as I prayed for my friend was even more interesting and a great blessing
to me.
As I slogged through the book of Job, starting around 5:30 A.M., it was evident that the
book was difficult to understand. There were all his friends and as they watched Job's
life and his family self-destruct, they had a lot to say. What was odd, was their
arguments sounded so right and it put Job in a bad light many times. So, between
short naps in my easy chair and reading with all the understanding I could, I muddled
through it. Finally about 11:00 A.M, I needed a break.
Heading for the shower, I began to worship, just little simple stuff, Jesus loves me, and
This Little Light of Mine, immature and foolish but I continued...... until the water ran
cold. Let me add a little to the story, at age 55, I was experiencing and had
experienced debilitating arthritis at times myself. And this day was one of those times
where my joints were aching, elbows, shoulders, and yes, especially both my knees.
The water of my shower ran cold so I shut it off and as I stepped from the tub, I noticed
my right knee wasn't hurting as I lifted that leg out, then my left leg, stepping onto the
rug and drying off, all signs of arthritis had vanished. It's been a year now and well, the
reason I'm writing this is because of what God did for me in that shower, he healed my
arthritic condition which on two occasions had left me on crutches for weeks at a time.
Praise God, there is nothing like being free of that pain, it's wonderful. Thank you Lord
for healing me, without even asking.
All I can say is that it was directly related to my praying for my friend, whose condition
was far worse than my own. In the end of Job, and through all his troubles, God said he
never sinned, and God blessed him all over again, wow. My friend?, well, a year later
he had that knee replacement. Turns out, the concern for him, led me to God, which
led me to Job, which led me to the word delight. It says Job delighted himself before the
Lord, exactly what I was attempting to do in the shower. Delighting yourself in the Lord
is simple obedience and trust, in it's simplest form, it's worship. For the entire year of
2007 this scripture has reverberated in my life. It's found in Psalm 37:4 Delight
yourself in the Lord and he will give you the desires of your heart.
Around that verse you find clues as to how to delight yourself, by trusting in Him, doing
good deeds, usually to those less fortunate than yourself with no way of paying you
back. We are told to dwell in the land and enjoy safe pasture. To me that speaks of
possessing our possessions and enjoying what God has done for us. Commit your way
to the Lord, that means to serve him without wavering, rock steady, without changing
our mind from day to day, like Job. Trust in Him, like a little child holding the hand of a
loving parent. He is our Father after all, right?
Be still before the Lord, this is not easy, but reflects on the oneness we should feel
toward God. We came from his hand, he created us, and we should seek him and His
will for our lives. Wait patiently for Him. What's the hurry? Why would we want to lead
a life running ahead of God, without his blessing? After this experience, I want God
beside me, or the other way around I want to be by God's side, only doing what he says
when he says. That's power and that is peace, and in my case, it's healing for a
pain-wracked body. Those afflicted with chronic arthritis know what I'm talking about.
It's time, I'm headed for the shower, to kick off my day. I highly recommend it,
worshiping God, not only in the shower, but anytime you can. He loves us and wants to
use us for his purposes. That is peace and joy. I recommend reading and meditating
on this psalm, check out what is says in Psalm 37, starting with verse 23. Cheers in
Jesus, Bruce
