Nut Shaping Tool Click Pics to Enlarge
Such a small part requiring a lot of detail work, the nut of the acoustic guitar is difficult to hold for shaping. This small handle is a simple tool and a wing nut has been added. The length of the bolt has been questioned, yet survives. The excess length actually makes it easier to hold onto as the nut is sanded to pencil lines and tapered on the string side. Enlarge the photo above and notice the notch on the squared right side. That keeps the nut aligned during the sanding operation.
The final step of making a nut is to hand sand with 320 grit sandpaper then buff with fine Menzerna buffing compound. I like them to be a bit shiny.
